{"id":554,"date":"2010-09-29T18:30:49","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T16:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.limilabs.com\/blog\/?p=554"},"modified":"2019-11-07T12:56:24","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T10:56:24","slug":"gmail-pop3-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.limilabs.com\/blog\/gmail-pop3-behavior","title":{"rendered":"Gmail&#8217;s POP3 behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5569 size-full alignleft\" title=\"gmail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.limilabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Gmail.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"114\"><\/p>\n<p>First remember to <a href=\"\/blog\/enable-pop3-in-gmail\">enable POP3 in Gmail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gmail&#8217;s POP3 configuration maybe sometimes confusing.<\/p>\n<p>In the Gmail&#8217;s web interface in &#8220;Settings&#8221; on &#8220;Forwarding and POP\/IMAP&#8221; tab in &#8220;POP Download&#8221; you&#8217;ll find drop down list called &#8220;<strong>When messages are accessed with POP<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the value list and the Gmail&#8217;s behavior:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>&#8220;keep Gmail&#8217;s copy in the Inbox&#8221;<\/strong>:<br \/>\nMessage stays in the Inbox,<br \/>\nweb interface says it&#8217;s unread,<br \/>\nmessage is <strong>not<\/strong> received for the second time when using POP3 client.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;mark Gmail&#8217;s copy as read&#8221;<\/strong>:<br \/>\nMessage stays in the Inbox,<br \/>\nweb interface says it&#8217;s read,<br \/>\nmessage is <strong>not<\/strong> received for the second time when using POP3 client.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;archive Gmail&#8217;s copy&#8221;<\/strong>:<br \/>\nMessage is removed from Inbox by issuing GetMessageByNumber or GetMessageByUID command,<br \/>\nin web interface you can find it in &#8216;All Mail&#8217;,<br \/>\nmessage is <strong>not<\/strong> received for the second time when using POP3 client.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;delete Gmail&#8217;s copy&#8221;<\/strong>:<br \/>\nMessage is deleted by issuing GetMessageByNumber or GetMessageByUID command,<br \/>\nin web interface you can find it in &#8216;Trash&#8217; for 30 days,<br \/>\nmessage is <strong>not<\/strong> received for the second time when using POP3 client.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Recent mode<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re accessing Gmail on multiple clients through POP, Gmail&#8217;s &#8216;recent mode&#8217; makes sure that all messages are made available to each client, rather than only to the first client to access new mail.<\/p>\n<p>Recent mode fetches the <strong>last 30 days of mail<\/strong>, regardless of whether it&#8217;s been sent to another POP3 client already.<\/p>\n<p>To enable recent mode you need to replace &#8220;username@gmail.com&#8221; specified in <em>User<\/em> property with &#8220;recent:username@gmail.com&#8221;.<br \/>\nAlso you should not be using <em>DeleteMessage <\/em>or <em>DeleteMessageByUID<\/em> methods.<\/p>\n<h2>Consider using IMAP<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to have a<strong> greater control<\/strong> over your emails you should use<strong> IMAP<\/strong> protocol.<\/p>\n<p>With IMAP you can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>access emails in different folders<\/li>\n<li>copy or move messages between folders<\/li>\n<li>mark messages read\/unread<\/li>\n<li>flag messages<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/get-email-information-from-imap-fast\">download emails&#8217; basic information very fast<\/a><\/li>\n<li>use <a href=\"\/blog\/imap-idle\">push email<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check <a href=\"\/blog\/pop3-vs-imap\">POP3 vs IMAP <\/a>for details.<\/p>\n<p>Mail.dll contains ready to use IMAP client.
